ipod nano (2009) synch question.

I have a nano that was given to me by my brother with a lot of music on it in that year... Obviously from his computer/iTunes account.
It is 4th gen I think (the longer one with slightly larger screen makes videos)
I used to link it with his laptop but he has now moved away, what I'd like to know is if I synch it to my laptop will I lose all the music on it? A couple of people have said that will be the case and I just wanted expert confirmation
TIA

Syncing will sync whats in your itunes to the ipod so yes you would potentially lose everything although iTunes will, I think, tell yo this is the case beforehand.
You can however keep all the music on there and manually copy new music over to it or delete anything you don't like.0 -
So i can open it as mass storage device to edit the music? Ie without iTunes? I didn't.think I could do that with it, I thought you had to synch every time (I'm not an apple fan really!)Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

In general, yes. There are however tools to permit you to copy the stuff back off the iPod into a new library.0 -

Well now my head hurts. I didn't think I'd be able to get any of the content from it on to my laptop, was told that too. This is why I dont like apple! What 'tools'?Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

I know there are other tools that can manage your data on an iPod, even copying music off it, however I use iTunes in 'manual' mode on my Windows lap top.
Launch iTunes (ive not upgraded to latest iTunes 11 yet)
Connect iPod
After a short while, the iPod will appear on the left hand side of iTunes window.
If you click on the iPod icon then on the right it gives all the settings for music/videos/podcasts etc.
Click on the relevant tab and make sure 'sync' is unchecked.
You can now copy music/albums/tracks from your iTunes library to the iPod manually (confusingly it says 'synchronising when the manual copy is in progress)
You can also copy a music folder/directory directly from Windows explorer over the iPod icon in iTunes and this method also copies.0 -
