Faulty Gas Meter - Advice Needed

Hi,
Looking for some advice, hope someone can help??

Recently just had gas meter fixed as it was leaking gas, it was leaking gas on our side so I guess we have been paying way too much for our gas. My OH did think our bills had been high! It has been like this since 2011 apparently.

Would I be able to claim back any money that I have paid to my energy company? Also I have changed supplier in this time so would I have to claim from both suppliers for this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Elle

If the leak was on your side then no...when there is a small gas leak then not very much gas is used. A cubic metre of gas is quite a lot of gas @ 1,000 litres and if that much was leaking then you would have smelt it before...or the neighbours would have smelt it. Anyway a cubic metre of gas is only about 11kWh costing about 45 pence. How many cubic metres of gas do you think leaked?

    Hi,
I really don't have a clue what cubic meters of gas was used. All I know is it has been leaking from Aug/Sept 2011 till now.
We and the neighbours did smell gas intermittintly but to be honest we all thought it was from their garden as they had problems with the gas pipe.
It was only after that was all fixed we could still smell gas and contacted scottish gas to come and investigate.

If the gas was leaking enough to make a dramatic difference to your bill there would not be a house to send the bill to ........ just a pile of rubble ;)

You smelt gas and did nothing about it? You can call the emergncy gas number at any time and they will come out very quickly and find the leak if it's on your property or your neighbours property they'll cut it off.

have to agree if the leaks on your side its your liability, however if it was the meter leaking this can change
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I'm sure you've probably smelt the odd bit of gas during the part of a second between you turning on a gas ring and actually igniting it.

You'd need to have all 4 gas rings on full for 2-3 hours to release about 1 cubic metre of gas.
  • Thanks for the comments,

I am now guessing from the replies that not that much gas was used to make a big difference to my usage and bills.

In response to the "you smelt gas and did nothing" comment, yes we did report it but were constantly told it was because of the gas pipe in neighbours garden, they have had terrible problems and transco were practically living there last year. It was only after that had all been fixed and still could smell gas that we phoned to report it, more than once. They investigated it 3 times before finding the meter was leaking.

Anyway think that is case closed now.

    Cheers,
    Elle

The rate of leakage would be such that it would have no significant effect on your bill.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
