Minor scrape - some advice please

Options
Driving home from work tonight I was involved in an incident which resulted in my car getting scratched.

As I was driving along a car undertook me in slow moving traffic and then tired to force its way in front of me, which resulted in the right side of their car scraping across the front of my car.

Both of us stopped and he got out of the car and starting swearing at me, at which point I asked him what he thought he was doing. He then got back in his car and drove off. 100m further down the road we pulled up at traffic lights and I saw him take a photo of my car reg.

I am now obviously home and besides a small scratch to the side of my car around the wheel arch there isn't any damage.

I'm not sure what to do next? I would happily leave the incident as it is and out it down to experience but don't want to be accused of anything further down the line. Should I report this to anyone? And is there any issue regarding not swapping details?

Finally the man was very aggressive and I wouldn't want to him to know where I live - is there any way he could find this out solely from my vehicle reg?

  • Go to your nearest Police Station and report the incident.

If he applies to askmid he'll have your details.

Thanks for the response Chopper Read - Do you mean I am required to report the incident to the police or that I should as he was acting aggressively?

As property was damaged and you didn't exchange details you are obliged to report this to the police asap.

Have your reason ready to explain why you are late in reporting if you are asked.

You also are obliged by your policy conditions to inform your insurers of the incident.

The 'incident' is a road traffic collision.

As far as the damage,it's gone over your head. If you are concerned on the ramifications, then report it

Section 170 under the Road Traffic Act 1988

It constitutes as road rage. By his reactions, there's a possibilty he wasn't insured,it's a ploy to get you to back off.
I would have got the police there and then to deal with the miscreant
  • Ok thanks both - have been to a police station and reported the RTA. The reason why I didn't exchange details at the time was that the other driver drove off.

Given there very minimal damage to my car I hope its the last I hear about it.
  • Did you get the reg of car that the aggressive miscreant was driving?
