hello everyone,
I am in desperate in need of a quick answer or advice.
ive started working yesterday and was aBout to sign off jsa, joint claim.
my husband is still looking for work though.
As far as i am concern, once i start working..jsa joint claim, housing
benefit and council tax benefit will stop.
i am earning min wage at 35 hours a week and with these wages, there's no way we can support ourselves. however, ive been told i am eligible for job grant of £100, one time off and tax credit. How much is this tax credit?
Also, ive been told housing benefit and council tax benefit would run for another 4 weeks once i start working. True?
Correct me if i am wrong, should i reduce my hours to 24(joint claim), he would be still entitled to JSA and housing and council tax benefit would run as normal?
the bottom lines is that with my working hours and min wage, we would would be worst off then we were on benefit?
This it would temporary, i hope of course and once my husband is back as a bread winner, i then can continue working full time. p/s - no children.
Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Your partner will not receive a penny in benefits. A couple only need £106 per week (after housing). As net minumum wage is more than £200 there will be not much more. As a couple you only receive a single shared room housing benefit - not likely to receive any housing or council tax benefits unless you are in London.
You may receive working tax credits for twelve months (not sure how much - probably about £100 per month) but only if you work 30 hours or more. If you reduce your hours to 24 you will receive no tax credits. After twelve months the credits will be less than £5 per week at most.
This website may help you with an estimate:

its £111 after housing, but if he is on conts based JSA, it will continue until he has been on it for 26 weeks.
a couple are entitled to the one bedroomed rate of LHA ( if renting privarely)
housing benefit is calculated on income and is not dependant on which benefits you may or may not receive.
a couple can earn upto 18k ish a year before they are no longer entitled for working tax credits, but the one who is claiming ( the working partner) must be 25 or over, if so you should apply0 -
thanks for the reply...
the part should i reduce my hours ..can my husband still get JSA and housing council tax benefit?0 -
not sure of you would have had to be claiming for 26 weeks to get a housing/council tax benefit run on. om sure someone who knows will come along.
if you have no children, you must work a minimum of 30 hours a week to get working tax credit.
your husband would only be able to get any JSA if you earn less than !111 a week. (if hes on income based JSA.
as a couple, you are expected to support him while he looks for work0
