Return items bought with 10% off have to pay difference in swap

I bought some items at Pets at Home store with a 10% off voucher. Had to return 3 items to be exchanged for similar items at same price. The store charged me the 10% which I had off. Is the store in the right to ask me for the 10% when I did a straight exchange for items in the same range at the same price? I would understand if I had asked for money back, then I would have received the amount I had previously paid which is 90% of the retail price. Supposing I had bought a garment from a clothing store at 10% off for somebody else and he/she has to exchange cos I got the size wrong, does that means he/she would have to pay the 10% before being allowed to make an exchange? Any thoughts? Is Pets at Home in the right?

If there was nothing wrong with the items then you have no right to return unless stated in the shops terms and conditions.

If they accept returns then I would expect they have to give you either your money back or store credit to the value of 90% of the price.

Exchanging is a funny one as I suppose they are in their rights not to let you exchange your purchases for more expensive ones. It all depends what T's & C's are on the 10% and the stores policy
