Clear the account with all the monies and close it0

I don't really believe that nothing can be done.
The only thing you need to do is inform the bank.An unwanted payment could be incriminating or have other unfortunate consequences.
The worst thing you could do is spend it and not inform the bank about it. It could then be claimed that you knew you were expecting it.Clear the account with all the monies and close it
and if its from criminal proceeds, the bank has your name and address and the police will be breaking down your front door to arrest you.0 -
I would write to your bank explaining that you do not believe this money to be yours and asking for the source of the funds to be traced.0

I don't really believe that nothing can be done. An unwanted payment could be incriminating or have other unfortunate consequences. It's ludicrous that there would be no way of simply rejecting it and having it returned where it came from.
.
That is the joys of faster payments. Has to be approved in 15 seconds, by the recieving bank.
Op, not used any referal sites that give cashback?Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
The bank can return payments. If the staff member tells you they cannot, ask to speak to their manager. In fact if the bank is informed of an error they are obliged to take steps to rectify it. I am not suggesting you have any right to keep the money but if the bank say they can't do anything you have a potential "change of position" defence if you do believe that the money must be yours.

Would it be a breach of the DPA to give the sortcode and account number of a payment received to a customer?1

But they do not need to. As it will not mean anything to them.
No. But they could send a FP straight back to it.
Is there no grey area there around the DPA?0 -
I use cashback sites but never spent this much internet shopping never mind reclaiming cash back!!
The bank did say that they could have refunded/returned the payment if it was made from one of their accounts but because the transaction looks to be correct and from a different bank they can't return it, I'll phone again tomorrow and see if I can speak to a manager...
