I had a similar problem with rice pudding recently. I'd used the small one I have with a litre of milk, usually use my bigger model. (Warning for anyone else who might consider it!)
The milk had overflowed and dribbled into the casing too, so I had an awful mess. Astonish paste and a washing up sponge removed it completely. I did try soaking the pot first but I think that the 'grittiness' in the paste helps to remove the really baked on bits. (Good for oven doors too!)
Warning, Be careful not to get water into the base bit where the electrics are! HTH
