Thought I've give you an update on this...

After I last posted I had to ignore the cat to discourage him from the garden as our Landlords were due to come for a house inspection and we're not allowed pets. So after a while he disappeared. Coincidently I asked the landlord whether the person who lived here before had a cat but they didn't know as they have recently purchased to house.

Anyway after a few days the cat returned at 7am in the morning screaming at the door to get in. It was raining so he wanted to come in the dry. Obviously I didn't let him in. Later that day he came back and I went outside to give him a little stroke. He's come back everyday since. I've asked the neighbour and they have no idea where he's come from.

He displayed some quite odd behavior for a cat. When I stroke him he purrs and rubs against you as a cat would normally do but then all of a sudden he will chew your hand or bat you with his paw. So then I stop stoking him but he's literally all over me trying to get my to stoke him again. Then I sat on the garden bench and he jumped straight on my knee for a stroke but them he climbed on my face and tried to sit there. He also climbed onto me from the table and he was clinging onto my front with all four paws, like he was climbing up my body! I've never seen this type of behavior from a cat - has anyone else?

Anyway I'm going to try and put a paper collar with details on him but it's raining at the moment so it will get soggy. He doesn't look unfed and I gave him a little brush (which he thought was a very good game!)

my cat does the 'allow stroking but then attack the hand' thing, but he's not vicious about it, and after a couple of seconds he's licking my hand.

it might be that he's been without affection for ages so is desperate for it, but then his defense mode comes into action.

with regard to the clinging on your front, try making a cradle with your arms, he might settle for a fussing in there.

My Dad's cat behaves just the same. It is normal.

It sounds a really friendly cat.

Might be worth taking the cat to the vet just to check there is a microchip.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

Thanks - I guess I've just never experienced such a friendly cat. He's a funny little thing. He sat outside the door for an hour earlier watching me make tea. Then it got dark and I had to close the curtains on him which broke my heart. He got bored once he couldn't watch us and wandered off after another 15 minutes.

In regards to taking him to the vets to check for a microchip - would I just have to put in carrier? I don't have a pet carrier - could I use anything else? I don't think he's been neutered - could he spray in my car?

    C'mon, you are hooked! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I bet you've even given him a name (looks like a Smudge to me).

    Aww he is so cute.

No one ever owns a cat. They own you. I say feed him and play with him if that's what you want.

I read this to my other half and he said sounds like its a reincarnation from an ex.

I like how you know it took him 15 mins to leave after you closed the curtains. I bet he was thinking just stop peeping at me through the curtains.

He is very cute but the whole story made me smile.

Looks like you now have at least a cat-share arrangement.

Haha yea, I've named him Sebastian (I don't know why!)

He's outside the door again this morning. I was hoping that as it's a weekend, he would be at home with his owners. But he's sat out there in the rain for over an hour now. I've hoovered the kitchen and he didn't even flinch at the hoover! He's not a scaredy cat!

I bet his owners put him out in the morning when they go to work and, like any self respecting cat, he'd rather be inside asleep on the sofa. Any sofa. Perhaps he had this arrangement with the previous occupants of your house?

Anyway, as you're not really allowed pets how about making him a dry bed in the garden somewhere? A blanket in an old cardboard box in the shed, that sort of thing. My neighbours in our last house had a stray cat living in their garden for years, they put an old tea chest on it's side in the hedge and put a box and blanket in there for the cat.
