Are Supermarket Money-off Deals Worth It?

Options
I'm collecting some feedback as part of my coursework for college which is based around supermarket fuel discounts.

e.g. spend £40, get 6p off per litre of fuel at the likes of Morrisons etc.

I was hoping to find out if in particular many people use these types of deals, whether it influences where they shop and if they think it's a worthwhile deal or not?

I personally think these deals cater for large households and the majority of my respondents have said they don't feel these deals are worth it? Though I was pretty surprised because I thought everyone'd be keen to get money off fuel given how expensive it is :P

Anyway I was hoping to start a discussion of sorts and maybe get some input as to what you all think!

We used to shop at Tesco, but there whole pricing structue and especially the way they go about BOGOF etc just started to annoy me. We now shop at Lidl (which is surprisingly good).

But if the do buy 5 packs of coffee and get 50p off a litre I might do that.

I will also perhaps stock up on wine to get the 10p off fuel vouchers at times and only if it suits.

With the supermarkets there is no such thing as a free lunch but if you are savy you might tilt these offers slightly in your favour. Off course some people will only shop at Tesco so it is a bit of a bonus and again booze is the easiest way to get the price of a shop up enough to trigger the voucher.

I ignore them all they are just a con. If I happen to spend £50 in Tesco and get a 5p off voucher then bonus but I would never go out of my way to buy things I don't need (or can get cheaper elsewhere) just to push the spend over £50. eg- I can buy a pack of 8 razor blades off the internet for over £3 less than Tesco so for me to add them into my basket just to push it over £50 so I can £2.50 at the pump is stupid.
Tesco know this but it makes for good advertising and PR.

it never is 5p off at tesco because they put the price of petrol up 2-3p before promotion starts

And the local stations tend to follow suit with the price increases when Tesco increases to cover the "promotion".

Surprisingly I had a poll a while ago and few people would be bothered to go an extra 30' to save 1p/litre. (40-65p/tank)

Personally I will spend £60 at a supermarket so long as I get 10p/litre (£6.50 for me off). I'll buy lots of coffee (and some of the other non perishables) if I can get 50p/litre off at Tesco as I buy that coffee anywhere. I'll also buy kids or my clothes at the supermarket to make the £40 or £60 or even some booze to tip it though I don't drink much a bottle or two keep until we have visitors.

I avoid Morrisons as they add 7% bio-fuel to their diesel but will buy if its cheap enough.

Um, largely disagree so long as you use the supermarket comparison sites and petrolprioces.com and make sure you're actually saving but I'd be interested in saving money on razor blades!!!
(I rip my face to bits economising)

You really can't beat the 50p/litre off Tesco were doing.... that's £32.50 off a 65l tank so I'll take paying an extra £5 for groceries.

They inflated the cost of the coffee though

Yes but not by 65p ......
I checked the alternatives with my supermarket.com at the time and the coffee was slightly more expensive than Morrisons and Asda but by about 15p not 65p. (My tank takes 65 litres and its usually close to empty before I refill)

We bought some items we usually buy just more of them and ended up with 50p/litre off which reduced a refill by £32.50, the whole shopping bill at Tesco was only about £40 after buying everything to get 50p/litre off and some canned goods that were as cheap as elsewhere while I was at Tesco.
  • I think everyone makes pretty good points to be fair.

What Hintza says about tilting the promos like this in your favour makes sense because if you are going to buy things that aren't perishable or bulk buy in say wine for a party etc. it could work for you.

Generally from what I've found out, the petrol money off offers only tempt a small amount of people to spend the minimum amount to take advantage of the promotion. I believe most people would prefer to shop at discounters like Lidl and just pay full price for the fuel because they think it works out less (from not spending more on the same items you could buy at Lidl for less)

Steven, if you tend to spend a large amount on groceries anyway, most people probably wouldn't think much of spending an extra £5. I think for people who would only do basket shops every so often, spending say 50-60 quid to get a money off voucher wouldn't be enough of a temptation.

Wife normally shops at Morrisons and spends about £100 a week so we use those when they are available.
I also buy my I-tunes vouchers from Morrisons, £50 = 5p / litre off as well. As we use these for our dance business they are tax deductable on the £50 as well so even better value.

And I also use the morrisons petrol points to get the £5.00 voucher to spend in store. so as far as I'm concerned its win-win.
