Just been reading all this thread, then went to see what was in my dogs/cats tinned food - sure enough 4% meat/animal/fish "derivatives" God knows what that could be...!
They only get a little of that on top of dry food as a treat, but the dried food for cats also says cereals and various derivatives so that's going to stop as well.
Will def be looking at going onto raw meat for our kitties - got 7 at the mo, 4 indoor, 3 in/outdoors. The 4 indoors will be allowed out soon, so less smelly cat issues but did in the meantime if they like the meat that will help.
I'll pass this info on to a friend who keeps Bengals, he was interested in feeding them a raw meat diet but wasn't sure how to get all the vits/mins as well, and neither was I so thanks for the detailed info FF.
I have pigs and meat chickens and always keep the offal but it's still in the freezer, I'll dig some out and try the cats on it, be interested to know bit more about what I can give dogs and indeed the ferrets too...they can eat high protein cat food, they like a raw egg now & again
I use wood pellet litter, £7-8 per big bag but I think it's the same stuff as the pellet fuel for woodburning stoves/boilers which is around £2/bag, looks identical, pet owners being swizzed again! Might try putting a few cat pellets in the woodburner tonight...0 -

Meat and fish derivatives are all the parts of the animal that contain useable nutrients but are not legally allowed to be described as meat or go into human food. So perhaps offal, connective tissue, bone and marrow, skin and fat, mechanically recovered stuff. Whilst it's not the highest quality so might not be the most MSE/ best value for money especially if you are buying pricey branded stuff, it's arguably better for an obligate carnivore than cereals/ grain sweepings.
I want people to be aware more than anything, make informed choices don't get fooled by the advertising. I do feed some Butchers Classic because I am happy with the other ingredients - no additives or cereals - and it's cheap as chips considering it is based on meat derivatives. As I have said I completely agree the choices we make have to fit in with our lifestyles, budget and pets tastes.
There is a lot more info for dogs out there than cats, Google BARF diet. Some are raw feeding ferrets too, but I know next to nothing about their nutritional needs other than they are meat eaters.I hope some of your troop enjoy the change, Noah adored it and I got a lot of pleasure watching him enjoy food when I also knew it was affordable and healthy.

got 4 huge lambs hearts from the butchers for £3
just chopped 2 of them up,.
stray cat just dived in and started chomping away, older cat just sniffed and walked away, kitten was playing with a piece like it was a mouse:rotfl: it was soooooooooooooooooo funny to watch, then she decided to eat it, and was growling that anything that went near 'her' kill even me:rotfl:
They def eat less meat than the tinned food stuff...Work to live= not live to work0
