Sorry if this has been repeated countless times but I couldn't really find anything specific.
Basically is there anything a complete PC numpty (me) can do to sort of self service my PC.
I do monthly virus scans and have automatic updates from Windows setup etc.
Is there anything else I could/should be doing to keep the old girl ticking over?
Ta very muchly.

A disk defrag every now and again should also be on the list

Oh and you'll find that your temporary internet files, cookies, cached pictures etc build up over time - Use the disk cleanup wizard to clear them out.0 -
As above plus Download Ccleaner which is very good at removing unwanted or not required files.
Remove programs that you dont need through add/remove programs or the ccleaner option.
Run a register fixer/cleaner such as tuneup utilities 2007 which is excellent.
You can edit startup programs easily that you dont require using tuneup as well including other features as well which will speed up your pc.
You should also have a spyware program if not 2 such as adaware and spybot search and destroy to scan your pc on a regular basis.
and from time to time run a free online virus scan such as Kaspersky just incase your Antivirus might of missed something.0 -

If your confident enough not to break anything, open the case up periodically and hoover the inside, inside of cases seem to be dust magnets0

Running a registry cleaner removes invalid files and data from program installation and removal and other use of programs.
Basically it sorts out your pc registry.
Startup programs are just that. Programs that load up when you boot your pc. Some are required so you leave them , but others either install something to startup which you never need or use. by remving these it reduces the boot up time and also less memory is used when just runnning and doing nothing on the pc.0
