Sounds about right, I bought bits and bobs, mainly cosmetics up to £50 and I've not been charged any tax. Luck of the draw. Perhaps if the box is big C&E are more inclined to have a look at in more detail? Mine have been relatively small packages under £100.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0 -

Not sure if this is the case, I've been charged for individual CDs quite often and sometimes the duty on those doubles the price paid.
Bought a gemstone from abroad last year for $200 and they sent it with an invoice for $45 - I didn't ask them to do this and was quite shocked that they would do something that dishonest! Still got an invoice from Fedex for £15 though, no idea how that was worked out on $45.0 -

My point exactly...the carriers figures are a joke.0 -

Unless the CD was marked as having a value in excess of £18 .... I don't see how C&E can justify charging duty? The MSE Dictionary

What really gets my goat is that in calculating it, DHL added the transport costs to the value of the gift before calculating the tax owed. Bumps it up a lot!!!
DHL dont calculate Duty and VAT - HM Customs and Excise do...0 -
That's correct. If items come outside the EU then they attract more money. I've imported from the US in the past in bulk and i've paid upto 30% of the purchase + shipping price in custom and VAT.
