Alternator belt's been checked and DH says it's okay.

Thanks, had a trawl through those two threads, and listened to the sound clip, not quite the same as what I'm hearing and there's lots of talk of belts which DH checked. There is a bit of talk about italian cars and their idiosyncrasies!

I took the car to a garage today, they suggested that I leave the car with them so that they can have it cold to try and detect the problem. They checked a few possibilites and found nothing amiss. I think it's worth paying them for half an hour to rule out/confirm that it's the gearbox.
