Daughter's first pre-school photos - to buy or not to buy?!

  • Our daughter had her first photos taken at pre-school the other day.

We'd like to buy some, but they are so expensive! Has anyone bought the cheapest pack, and scanned them in to a computer? I was thinking of using an online printing service, naming no names!

I have printed a 10x8 professional wedding photo this way, and no questions were asked. I did have the rights to my wedding photos though...

This is why photographers go out of business and/or charge so much. Buying some, then scanning them and reprinting is almost certainly a breach of copyright. Do folk do it? Sure they do. But do photographers know this? Sure they do - so they'll likely put their prices up. If you buy a photo all you own is the paper it's printed on unless you have a document written by the photographer telling you otherwise. Copying it, posting it on FB etc is a breach of copyright unless you have expressed, written permission of the copyright holder - the photographer. I'd suggest asking a friend with a decent camera (we all have such a friend these days) to recreate the shots and pay them for their time with a pizza! ;)

I'm afraid I got sucked into buying my child's first pre-school photos. Nursery told us the photographer was coming and I thought I won't be falling for that, but the results were too cute to resist.

I did exactly what you are thinking OP. Bought a single big photo and scanned it in. Obviously you lose something of the quality, but not enough to see with the naked eye.

Going to try not to succumb next time round tho!!

Unless you have an arrangement, the copyright will still belong to the photographer, so scanning and printing will be in breech of the copyright
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • Cooper18 and Raksha - very true!

I have decided that as these are the first preschool pics she has had, I am going to buy a set with enough for the people who'd want one.

Whether I purchase any in the future is probably unlikely as I'm off to Max Spielmann in the future to get them taken there - with my other child on them too :) Thanks t_obermory!

Thanks for your help guys - my fella was useless on this one!!
  • I have just re-read what I posted previously and thought I sounded a bit rude. Apologies if it came across that way, absolutely not intended.:o

Not at all! I agree with you. It must be happening everywhere, and sadly, putting people out of business and, as you say, prices up.

    :)

These are with Temp3$t and the USB equivalent is £40.50.... seems quite steep to me, but I am a skinflint, and haven't had any experience with these things yet :)
That's the same company as did my dd's school pic's, I didn't realize at first but you can look at the photo's on their website, they still have the watermark but you do get a better idea of the photo than from the wee one on the form they give you.
You may have already done this but just in case I thought I'd mention it.
    Booo!!!

After my school photo bill doubling this year due to my kids being at different schools, I've decided I'm just not buying them next year.

I have a decent camera and see no reason why I can't get the same photo if I sit them in front of a neutral background and do it myself, at least then I'll get a picture of both kids together and I'll be able to give a copy to all of the relatives. I'm planning on buying the frames from ebay.

Failing that you can go to Max Speilman and have them taken by them for a fraction of the price.

My daughter is now at secondary school, but all through her primary years I only bought the school photo if it actually was a good picture - I think I have 3 years worth out of 7 ;).

My preschool doesn't do any pics. TBH unless they were exceptional I'd not bother. I have literally hundreds of pix of DD, many of them really good that capture her personality. Why pay?

Something that a lot of people do not care about (the majority) or know about.
It is no different to ripping off/scamming anything, and all it will achieve is to push more businesses to the wall.
Hopefully the photographer will have plastered their copyright mark right over the centre of the images.
