yes, startup is automatic, and restarting it makes no difference. i really dont know what to do next

I am beginning to suspect that the problem *may* lie with your IDE controller - the links below include troubleshooting steps that will include checks you can make for this -

At the hardware level, is the internal DVD drive connected via an 80 or 40 wire cable? If 80 wire, is the jumper set to cable select? If 40 wire, is it on a shared IDE ribbon cable, and has a different master / slave jumper setting to the other IDE device connected to that ribbon?

Can you enter the BIOS and confirm that the internal DVD drive is properly identified when you use the IDE autodetect option?
