Hiya,
I have a P reg peugeot 106, it has started making a sort of screeching sound, which only happens in the evening or if it's raining
Anyways, the baby's dad reckons the cam belt needs changing, does this sound right? I'ved looked on other threads and seen i'll be looking to pay over £100 to get it fixed, which is a pain in the bum coz i've already spent over £500 on it since i bought it last june  but i'll do it coz the threads say it will cost more if it breaks
Also, i recently had my brake pads changed but still get grinding noise when i brake, i took it back to the garage to get them to do a brake check and they say it's fine, is there any other possible explanation, i know you cant really say without seeig the car but the noise is the same noise you get when the pads need changing.
I'm going to book it in with the garage but thought i'd see if anyone here could shed a bit of light aswell.
Thnx for reading.

Cam belts don't screech. Could simply be the alternator/power steering belt needs adjusting. Can't really say about the brake noise but perhaps they need to bed in if only recently replaced. Get a second opinion. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Its your fan belt hun, not cam belt, if you know anyone who is half knowledgable with cars, this can be replaced for about £7.
As for the brakes, take them to another garage for a break check, some places do them for free I think. I am not sure if you will know how to do this but will try.
If you know where your brake disks are, run your finger from the inside to the outside, and if there is a large bump on the outside edge, the disks want replacing. I would deffo take it to another garage, if you have gone to some dodgy guys, then they ain't going to admit if they did a shoddy job.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -

If the screech happens when stationary, it won't be the brakes.
To stop yourself getting ripped off, it's best to learn a bit about cars, you should be able to check the state of the brake pads with a torch, and then be able to go to garages better armed against their dodgy methods
The screeching only happens when it rains or is colder, the grinding happens when i brake.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -
The screech is most likely to be the alternator as above, it should be very easy to tighten, maybe 3 or 4 bolts. You should be able to fix this yourself.
The grinding noise, could be either the front or back brakes, we had our front pads changed but the grinding was coming from the rear shoes. This cost a further £70 to repair.
Find a local garage, not main dealer or kwikfit/nationwide who will take the time to look properly at the car.0
