Insurance Renewal Fees

So, this £20 Hastings renewal fee - what do I need to do to avoid it? Their T&Cs say it's for "Arranging your car renewal".
Will they have done that if they auto-renew it and a new policy starts or will they have done that by sending me the letter saying your policy is going to be £x next year?!
Edit: I've just checked my policy documents and at the time I bought it, the T&Cs showed the renewal fee was only £5 so I can't see how they can charge anything other than that for whatever it is they charge it for.
I think I'll give them a call tomorrow to tell them not to auto-renew it anyway.0 -
AXA should be added to the Shame List!0

Hi everyone, and welcome.
More and more insurers are starting to introduce renewal fees – which we think is a bit of a cheek.
We have listed some, and the charges they add on to your renewal premium, but is this going to be the start of a new insurance charge.
We'd love to hear your thoughts and if your insurer is starting to charge you a 'renewal fee' and how much.
This thread doesn’t just apply to car insurance renewal fees but also home insurance, bike insurance, any insurance.
Thank you,
MSE Tony
One Call Direct charge a £25 renewal fee for car insurance
I got a much cheaper price online with them but when I tried to take it out they would not let me until I had been without insurance for 2 weeks & no longer on their system.
They said they always charge the £25 renewal fee once you are a customer.
You would think that Insurance Companies would want to keep your custom especially if you have had no claims rather than charging you extra for staying with them!

One Call also charge for renewing. Plus this year on the comparethemarket.com quoted £251.16 and moneysupermarket.com have quoted £283.11. Yet their renewal quote is £609.19 and this is because a bogus claim has been made and they have still got this active so they say this is why they have quoted so high. This claim was supposed to have been made online on 9th Sept 2014, yet the incident was supposed to of happened on 21/04/2014. I was at home on this date and the car on the drive locked up as it was Easter Monday and we had just come back from a long weekend in Scotland visiting relatives. So can hardly be at home in Warrington and be involved in an accident down South.0

LEI has always been a nice little earner to make up for lousy commissions on the actual motor policy hasn't it?
LEI? BTE?
sorry for being so ignorant!0 -
To avoid fees, as much as possible I tend to use online Insurance comparison sites. Ones specific to Insurance are best, for instance I like https://www.justquoteme.co.uk
Got my Public Liability there last week, it was cheaper than traditional brokers believe me! Good post OP!0 -
I've never noticed these before, but this year they include a charge of £10 for their privilege of me not taking my insurance elsewhere. Charging fees to make alterations to policies is one thing. Charging fees to renew a policy is another. Don't they want me to renew?
(Yes, I know now that some insurers are sneaking in £20 or even more to renew a policy).0 -

I have not seen any charges by insurers for renewing a policy. There are charges by brokers for renewing a policy but that is different.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
