Painting over bright / very dark painted walls?

Recently painted our dark terracotta lounge a light cream.
Two coats of Dulux white matt emulsion, then two coats of the chosen Dulux colour.
White is a lot cheaper than coloured paint, even sticking with Dulux. I've tried cheaper white before (e.g. B&Q own) but it's so thin it takes loads of coats. Worth buying Dulux, Crown etc (think we got 10 litres of white for about £15) for the sake of a few quid more.
I've never bothered with primer or lining paper. So long as you're covering standard matt emulsion, just start throwing paint at it.0 -
Alot of people here are NOT thinking about the cost (use quality £33 paint, lining paper etc.) Do exactly like a poster put ,go and buy VERY cheap white emulsion and cover the walls with it (at same time you can do the ceilings as well) may take a couple of coats (leave each coat for around 3 hours "It may say 6 hours but 3 is plenty") Then paint with the colour so you require (Do a search as wickes, homebase and b&Q are doing offers on paint at the moment) Goodluck with your home renovation.0

We had a room that was pillar box red (old plaster not paint though). My aunty helped us paint it yellow and some how managed to completely cover in one coat! Honest to god,, no idea how she managed it. She used a roller and me a brush round the edges. It went on pretty thick but not so that you'd notice when dry. Only my edges needed another coat. (This was just normal wilkinson matt paint, matt as the walls were bumpy, maybe that's the difference??)
Reason im saying this is obviously its possible to cover bright colours in very few coats so don't go spending too much on white or another colour as you may find this just as hard to cover... and plus you may not need it anyway!0 -

OK if you have the time and the patience to do 4 or 5 coats of paint.... Remember Time is Money so maybe spending less on paint but taking you twice as long. Seriously...... go better quality paint... I speak from the pain of having to paint a dark wall 5 or 6 times with cheap c.r.a.p paint in the past..... Dulux White Supermatt First, then colour of choice twice if you want a really nice finish. Get paint from a paint centre. it's MUCH better quality and if going for basic magnolia, it's not that expensive at all. In my opinion the vynal paints are better wearing and can be wiped down easily especially when there are kids involved.... also doesn't peal off when removing those lovely Justin Beaber "blu-tacked" posters kids love so much0 -
Go to somewhere like Brewers and buy a grey emulsion. Apply this then paint over once dry with white. The grey seems to neutralise the darkness but then allows a good white base to be applied.0
