Help!
Selling up and moving from UK to Northern Ireland BUT staying for 6 months in Republic of Ireland before move to NI.
Car insurance with esure but they do not cover NI at all!
Aviva NI will not take me without an NI address.
What are my options?
Can I insure an UK registered car in Republic at my family address short term and then insure again in NI when I have an address? Is that the best thing to do?
When is the UK not the UK? When it is NI

I believe that the UK mainland Car Insurers not covering cars in NI is something to do with the law that applies. In NI they have different laws to the rest of the UK.
You should be able to get Car Insurance in Ireland for a UK reg. car , but may have to do so against the chasis number, if they won't do against the reg no. Speak to a broker in Ireland. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
Thanks Huckster.
Just telling me about the chassis number was more info than I got from 2 hrs of phone calls to insurance companies both sides of the border0 -
It is a GB registered car! Not UK! You cannot register a GB vehicle in the ROI without importing it and paying the fees. You wil then be given a ROI registration mark and have to take out ROI insurance which will cover you for NI.
If you plan to live in NI, then you need to contact DVLA NI Coleraine who will provide an NI plate. To avoid complications, your existing cover will be legal for NI, so keep this going.0 -
I thought that insuring a car by chassis number was just a temporary thing whilst going through the process of re-registering in a different country? The only time I've done it involved an Irish car being registered in the UK.
It used to be difficult to insure an NI risk from GB unless you could deal with the Belfast office of the insurer. Think its easier now.
OP, I would speak to a broker in somewhere close to the border like Newry and see what solution they come up with. If you were going straight to NI it would be easy, other than with esure by the sound of it and I know some won't cover NI risks but there should be enough that will.0 -
Buzby,
If I have sold my UK home will esure still insure me as if I am "on holiday" in RoI? Even for as long as 6 months? I cannot take out another policy (or so I have been told) in NI until I have an address there.
Sorry about mix up re UK/GB but I'd lost the will to live by the time I posted!0
