ok, im no comp buff, so all i can tell you is what has happened and hope someone can help.

a friend partitioned my comp off some time ago to give me c & d parts of the hard drive. never have got the hang of it but there you go... anyways, couple of weeks ago i kept getting warnings that id been hit by virus etc and they had been caught by avg and dealt with... i got 3 or 4 a day which was unusual.

then one day last week i turned comp on and it got to the boot up stage just before the windows window appears if you know what i mean and then it didnt get any further, it just kept re booting itself time and time again.

Sooooo i put the windows XP disc in the drive and it said it was copying files etc and i ended up with an xp screen with no software or files on it... it kept saying to re install everything... HOWEVER, when i try to reinstall it says memory is full and i need to delete some stuff...

does anyone have any ideas what has happened and how to fix it please?????

thanks Loopzzzz

From what you say, it sounds like perhaps you have re-installed Windows XP alongside the old Windows installation and all your old files without formatting.

As you've had virus issues, by far the cleanest break you can make here is to re-install Windows XP, format the hard drive during that process (at this point you could change the partitioning too if you don't get on with having it split between 'C' and 'D'), and then install all your applications on the newly created free space.

It does sound as Fonz wrote. All I would be worried about is your documents & pictures as if the drive is formatted it will lose all data so I hope you have backed up. If not you will need to take the pc or HDD to someone who can get the data off. Or if you have another pc then put the drive into that one and get the data off - run a virus scan on the drive 1st. Then reinstall windows after a format.

Point well made about backing up! You might find that a friend can lend you a USB memory stick or something of that nature to back up on whilst you complete the format.

Boot from your Windows XP Installation Disk to reinstal Windows and it should give you the option to format the drive during the setup process.

After you've inserted the disc...the choice will present itself. You can also delete the D: partition.
