how long did it take you i think i could do it abouut 1hr 15 min

I can ride at an average of about 9mph off-road (over 30 miles), and around 12mph on tarmac (using my mountain bike and carrying a very heavy load).

So... 10 miles on tarmac would take me about 50mins (less if I had a road bike or didn't have a heavy bag)... or off-road (on dirt-tracks and unmade roads) it would be around 67mins.

    Don't know if that helps...?
  • Used to take me 35 minutes on a good day, a bit more in traffic.

That was on a road bike, easily add 5 to 10 mins on a mtb on knobblies.

As someone else has said, definitely need a change of clothes at work :)

I would be concerned that it is only a matter of time until some myopic driver knocks you off.

  • Go for it, its far easier than you'd think. I'm several stones overweight and manage to cycle between 25 and 40 miles per day round trip, depending whether I go the long way round or not.

It will save you a fortune in travel costs - eg public transport fares / car costs ( remember cost of car is not just fuel, but wear and tear etc)

It also will give you good exercise so you will not need to find the time/ money to go to a gym.
  • Hi,

I've been doing a 24 mile round trip into work for the last 2 years.

Don't worry too much about the distance, 10 miles should be fine, just allow a bit of extra time.

Regarding drivers, there are good drivers and bad, just like there are good and bad cyclists. Most drivers are ok, just don't assume that they will acknowledge you, give you any space or generally be considerate, then you have a pleasant suprise when they do. A friendly wave helps, little point in getting anoyed as they are in a 1 tonne metal box and your just flesh and bone.

Cycle assertively and give clear signals. Get really good lights and be predictable, expect all drivers to be distracted and plan ahead.

If you have a shower at work then great, otherwise baby wipes work really well. Definately a change of clothes. Dedicated cycling gear will help keep you warm and dry. Don't bother with waterproof trousers as your legs are waterproof. A quick wipe down will be fine.

Get a good helmet. Read cyclecraft. Be assertive but considerate.

    Good luck

I agree with all of this and would add

Leave work shoes ( & suit etc) at work so you can just bring change of shirt/ underwear wit you each day to lessen what you need to carry

Perfectly do-able. I do a 20 mile round trip every day. 17 years now. When I first started it would take about 50 mins. Now it is 35 to 40 mins average. And these days I ride singlespeed!

Just go for it, and good luck!
  • It takes me on average 1 hour 15 mins to cycle 11 miles on a hybrid bike into central London. But I have two big hills and the entire journey is quite hilly.

You might even be quite lucky, to have a more or less downhill journey into London. After all, London is at the bottom of the valley between the North Downs and the South Downs. It depends where you live.

I think it's manageable. Give it three test runs, and see if you like it. All the best.
  • There's only one way to find out! I agree about the 'clothes at work' thing - if you can ride without a bag it's much more pleasant. Give yourself plenty of time for the first few weeks, and learn how to fix punctures and other minor mechanical problems. Be sensible but assertive on the road, obey the law, NEVER go up the inside of vehicles at junctions, and enjoy the ride! :-)
    It's only numbers.
