Two people have shown poor judgment here.

One can't judge the length of the car in the dark, and one didn't judge the width of the car in daylight.

The decision to attempt this risky manoeuvre is all yours, and although it's frustrating it's also difficult to see how the other party can be held liable for the self-inflicted damage to your car.

If you'd had to take a taxi and then sued them for the cost of the taxi, then that might be an interesting case, but I don't even know where this stands legally.

The best thing to have done would be consult the police that morning. I've done so when a corner at the end of this road was partly blocked. I've also phoned someone at 2 am to ask them to move their van, for the same reason.

My car was blocked on my drive for 3 days. I called the police, who said they had no power to remove it. The law states that you must be given free access to your property, so your drive must be clear for you to get onto when you come home, but that once you are on your driveway someone can then legally park across your dip. The ever-desperate notes I left on the windscreen of the offending car were thrown on my driveway with some choice turns of phrase on it. Nice.

The law is actually the other way round, it is an offence to block your access to the highway from your property but not to block you from entering your property.

So many things could have gone wrong on that journey. What would you have done if you were caught in a traffic jam? If it was so important, you needed to leave time for things to go wrong, so should have got up earlier. In the past I've stayed overnight somewhere to make sure I get to something on time.

Not helpful for you Op, sorry, but I often find my own car blocked in by random people parking across my drive.

What does the law say about not blocking driveways, can anyone specify please?
I spoke to a policwomn about this because I am ticked off about the amount of times I have been blocked in.Even though there is plenty of room behind the offending car. You are not going to bbelieve this. But seemingly the police will not do anything about it. So what happens if I need to get out due to an emergency? She did tell me that if however I drive up and someone has blocked my drive stopping me getting access to my property, then that is an offence and the police can be called. To be honest I really can't believe this.

tracykillick is right. I was told the same thing by a policewoman. It does sound crazy that it is not an offence to block you in your driveway but is if you are blocked out from getting back into it. Absolutely crazy.

Do a bit of research, what i have put in my post is correct and if the police say otherwise then they need training.

I have to admit I ave blocked a neighbours drive.

I could not park near my house and I was literally nipping in to get purse. I knew the mum knew me but did not know my car so checked with dd that her dd knew it was mine!

In that two mins she arrived back and told me off! Tongue in cheek but she says I'd be amazed at how many times she's been blocked in by the parents picking up kids!

If it is this way round I shall be ringing the council re the bin men who leave my bin right in the middle of my drive entrance every time they empty it causing me to have to pull over, get out, remove the bid and then drive in. Not a good thing to have to do with cars coming up behind you. I leave the bin as instructed on the grass verge exactly as instructed.

A complete moron parked in our cul-de-sac on Monday morning, in such a way that they blocked off the exit to the road from the shared parking area. I think they arrived at around 9am so luckily most people going to work had already left, but one man hadnt.

He and his wife spent 20 mins knocking on doors and they couldnt find out whose car it was. So another lady had to move her car, so he could basically drive out of the parking area, over and across a pavement and a grass area just to get out. If she hadnt been in, his car would have been trapped.

My car was then trapped and I needed to go out, so I rang on another neighbours door who had to move her car from the road for a minute so I could drive over another section of pavement and grass area and back down onto the road.

The man and me both left notes on her car telling her not to park there again as she was blocking an entire car park exit.

Her car was there for around 5 hours so by that point I thought I would call the police to make sure it was moved before 5-6pm when people started to come back from work and would not have been able to access the car parking area.

Just as I was being put through, this woman came and got in her car. Typical! She looked at the notes and chucked them on the ground. What annoys me is that she clearly thinks its ok to park there, and also that someone once parked in that exact spot around a year ago, and I was blocked in then, and Im 99% sure it was the same person.

Next time I will call the police straight away to make sure she gets a ticket.

My friend had someone park infront of their garage once so they couldnt get out. The police issued the person a ticket, and the person had a whinge at them. Some people should not be allowed to drive.
