Inner door of oven shattered - can we still use?

Hello everyone - my first ever post, by the way!

We have a Hygena oven which was in the house when we moved in three years ago, and didn't seem too old at the time. It's been fine, until the other night when the (removable) inner glass door suddenly shattered when we were heating the oven up.

We are wondering if the oven is still safe to use (whether the outer door will suffer the same fate) and if so, whether the oven will retain enough heat without the inner door. I know we can buy replacement doors (I've seen a company on ebay) but does anyone know if we really need one?

Sorry if there's been a previous post on this topic - I did look and couldn't find one. If anyone can help at all - thank you!!

I would think it is a safety glass and as such I would not use it without, it is there for a reason.

Its a thermal barrier, without the inner glass the outer glass is exposed to the full heat of the oven which means it will get seriously hot. On top of that it could also shatter given its now exposed to the full heat of the oven.

To me its to dangerous, i would replace the glass or the oven, probably the latter.

I'd say this was the best advice, if it's shattered it could be an indication that the thermostat is stuffed and if so it would be dangerous to continue using it not to mention costly as everything would burn and it would most likely be consuming gas at full throttle.

Thanks, both - I'm amazed how quickly you got back to me!

I suppose I'll just have to pay up - to be honest, I didn't really think there was a way around it, but it was worth a go.

    Cheers fellas!

  • Had the same problem a few months ago with a moffat oven , tenant was in the living room, oven was off and cold , and the front glass exploded, when we called them up for a price (now out of guarantee) explaining what happened they fitted a new door F O C .

Try given them a call ! don't tell them you inherited the kitchen, leave that fact out, it's just possible that this type of glass might be a problem who knows they might send you a new one.

This can happen with this type of glass.

It is often caused by nickel sulphide crystals within the glass.

I've had it happen on two frameless windows in the same car - the first time we thought that someone had thrown a stone at the side window, as it happened when the car was parked on the road.

The second time however, the car was in the garage!
