I wouldn't say its incredible but certainly functional.
It's only 140BHP so its not really very quick and equally it gets less MPG in real life than my 3L BMW on motorways at 75 but it is durable and a nice engine to drive.

Our Accord has 180,000 on it and will hopefully last another 5 years.

For only 140BHP it's quick enough for use on British roads, and in a car as light as the civic it can really fly.
i imagine its a darn sight better than a 3l BMW on the 3 days a year of snow we have (but that is a more suitable argument for someone living in Sweden than here I guess...)

But compared to Ford, Peugeot, Vauxhall, VW, and other standard diesel units ive driven, the Honda is by far the nicest to drive.

I used the Honda a couple of days in the snow.... it also has all weather tyres which the BMW didn't..

Its better than adequate (the engine), its reasonably quiet, sounds quite nice (the whine rather than rumble) and it sits in cars that are reliable but its not a game changing diesel? (except for Honda)

The old Isuzu 1.7 put in Vauxhalls was at the time..... it proved diesels could be realistic competitors to petrol. Annoying in manual due tot he tight power bands but game changing all the same. This was also true for the PSA group 1.9 XUD.

The 3.0 BMW is a game changer.... If you look at when it was built/designed it delivers what was supercar performance with the same fuel economy outside town of a supermini eco-model.

The 2.2 TDCI changed the game for Honda but not the industry.
Its certainly more than competent ... but amazing isn't quite the right word.

BMW and Honda are 2 different markets of cars. If i had bought a 58 plate bmw 3 series than a civic im sure the engine would have been something else, but the bmw would cost a lot more, and id probably get less overall for my money (certainly less space for passengers!)
but for me, the honda engine compared to Ford, Peugeot citroen, vw etc, as i listed before, is far better - in my opinion!
I had the older civic with the 1.7 isuzu diesel engine in, and its a great little motor for economy, but i prefer honda's 2.2 (in part as it's much quicker!)
comparing honda to bmw is like comparing Argentinian steak to a brisket, there will be a difference...

I understand that parts for these are VERY expensive & VERY hard to source.
  • A friend of mine had a Bongo. The head gasket went last year and the bill was well over a grand. He got rid asap.
