which insurance to claim on?

In brief, I've had petplan insurance for Skip since we got her 6 years ago. Shes never been ill, and we've never made a claim.
The renewal came through at £50/month, so I shopped around and took out a new policy in December with AXA. I let the petplan policy run on, because AXA didn't cover some things in the first 4 weeks of the policy. So at this moment I have two "live" policies.

Over the weekend the poor dog broke her leg, and had an operation to set it.
I feel very lucky that I've got two lots of pet insurance :jbut I'm not sure which to claim under....please help!

  • I'd check the T&Cs first as there's usually a clause that if more than one policy is in existence then the costs will be split on a % basis between all the insurance companies.

If nothing, then I guess it really depends on which one you want to continue - whichever you claim on, it will be excluded from any new policy as a pre-existing condition so if you're intending to let the Axa one run, then I'd claim from that one (so you can have ongoing treatment)

Hope she's on the mend soon, poor lamb

I'd notify both - a broken leg can hardly be called a pre-existing condition.

AXA would not cover pre-existing in the first weeks, but would be unlikely to turn down a claim for a sudden broken leg (verified by the vets).

The pre-existing exclusion is written in for those that have an inkling something is wrong, then take out insurance - thus making the dog suffer for 4 weeks, which hopefully 99% of the human race would not do.

That was the case with a friend of mine who had 2 policies for the "overlap" of time (starting the new and still having the old) and of course THEN dog needed treatment. Both had to be notified and the cost was split.
