Valor portable gas fire bottom flame not working

The fire works, once ignited, when the gas feed button is continually depressed; but when I take my hand off the gas supply button, the fire goes out. The problem is the flame at the bottom of the fire - which has now stopped working.
This is a problem that has worsened over two days. But I have not used the fire for a year before that, and the fire is 12-yr old.
Is it a terminal problem, or something I can "unblock/clean" myself?
If not, what is a good replacement portable gas fire. This one is a Valor.
Not a good week for portable heating appliances, for me!

That is an old one ! They haven't made them in over 15 years , you must have got the last of the batch.
You could try cleaning the pilot ignition out, but it may be time for a new one.
If when it is working, it has a yellow flame coming out of it and you are having some black sooty marks on the white radiants, STOP using it and throw it out, it is dangerous. It is not burning correctly and could be giving off really bad fumes.
In any case try opening a window a little to give your room some needed ventilation.
It could be the thermocouple which has gone on it. you won't be able to buy a genuine part for it, you could ask a reputable RGI if he can get possibly a universal one for it, but by the time you have bought the part and got him to fit it, you may be better buying a new one.
New ones would all be similar made, possibly turkish in origin.
Something like this should be ok

When I've had that problem in the past, especially as you haven't used it in ages, was the fire put away because the gas was running out?0

Thanks for the replies. Fire back in operation for now. If it continues to get moody, I'll just buy a new model. I would have considered something else, but just paid out £35 for a new gas bottle a few days ago! It's 12+ years old. It doesn't owe me anything.0
