Hi

My friends laptop switches on then switches off straight away, when he plugs it in the green light comes on saying battery is charging but the battery light is on red.
Any help please, should laptops work with a faulty battery, straight from the mains?

The laptop should work with no battery (on the mains) Try that. If you are getting problems after that then it is possibly a hardware fault, overheating, check all vents are clear of dust. How long does it stay on for? Check voltage on the mains adapter

Laptop does not work on the mains, comes on for about 2 secs then closes down.

If you can try a different ac adapter to make sure that one you have is not faulty. Other than that I would say it has a serious hardware fault that is causing it to shutdown, probably to stop more damage happening. You could try removeing the Floppy, CD, HDD & ram & see if it stays on albeit in error state. If it stilll shuts down alsomt immediately then it may need to be looked at by someone but it doesn't sound promising.
