Its for the best. I have seen clients trying to do this and something always trips them up - nurses and vets do communicate between local practices.

You will feel better, just keep saving. Also bear in mind if she did need something major you could discuss a payment plan, or interest free finance from the vets (there are companies that provide this so all above board).

However, the current insurance would cover for anything not related. Can you afford to save and be insured? Just thinkig of RTA or dog bites or eating something silly. All genuine accidents that if you stop insurance won't be covered, and the savings would be gone on this.

My credit rating is excellent so I could take out a 0% credit card if necessary.
  • I've just edited so not sure if you have seen it!

When I took Sadie to have the myelogram 3 weeks ago I mentioned payment plans. I was told payment has to be made in full before animal is released. So maybe I could take out a 0% CC now and not use it. NWide is offering 20 months - anyone know any better

If you decide not to get any new health insurance policy then I would suggest at minimum joining the Dogs Trust. The £25 a year membership includes 3rd party liability cover for any dog in your household - so this will include cover such as a claim against you should your dog get loose and cause a car crash, should it bite another dog on a walk (especially if your dog has a health issue that might make it snappy if pestered), bite a person, etc.

  • You could - it depends if you are disciplined enough not to use it?

There is a company called Braemar that provide interest free loans for medical treatments. They usually do dental/cosmetic stuff but cover vets.

However you may need to be a more regular client to access this.

Have you considered staying insured for all other stuff and saving for any spinal stuff?

A lot of home contents policies already include TP liability for domestic pets - so check your current policy wording, and stick the £25 in a pot towards future vets bills.

Some home contents insurance even covers damage caused by pet - check the policy wording closely, they are all not the High Net Worth type of policies either, from what I recall Ecclesastical may cover it, and my old policy with Provincial did (now part of AXA, so need to double the check the current exclusions). Guardian Royal Exchange even had alternative accomodation extended to kenneling - also now part of AXA.
  • So .... when the insurance company ask for a medical history, you're going to say she's never been to a vet except for her initial jabs?

    Can you back this up?
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!
