hey guys
i need to hand in my notice tomorrow and very nervous as iv not been there long and am a temp, i am on 2 weeks notice but can only work 1 week as the other job starts in a week
I dont need a reference from them so thought about just not going in...but i think its better if i give the 1 week notice. Could i say i have an operation which needs 2/3 months recovery and dont want to leave them hanging..? Or should i just say the truth, i got a better job and have to start in a week?

I can't see any reason to lie about it, just tell them the truth.
Anyway, if you make up some weird and wonderful story they probably wouldn't believe you anywayEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Talk to your employer. Ask for permission to leave early and make sure you leave on good terms. If you just dont turn up you may find it coming back and biting you some time later. Imagine going somewhere for an interview in a couple of years time and who's there to interview you - your old boss.
And next time dont agree a starting date which you cant honestly make.0 -
Does the employer pay the salary or you work via an agency? We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

the reason for this is as i left this job off my cv thus they think i am immediately available!0 -
Talk to the employer. "My new employer would like me to start next week. I realise this is shorter than my official notice and would be grateful if you would let me only work one weeks notice. Apologies if this leaves you short of staff"0

So, looking to lie to current employer and have lied to new employer. You're not coming across very well here.
Telling the truth is sometimes hard, but often worth it in the long run!1 -
I would recommend you talk to the employer and explain that you don't like letting them down, which is why you are happy to work one week's notice, rather than just leaving immediately, but explain that it is too good an opportunity to miss.0

Won't they then wonder why they haven't been asked to do a reference?Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -

Who cares? They aren't likely to go looking to do one without being asked unless you've got a really vindictive boss.
The upshot is that lying is bad. Being honest is better - and there is no reason to lie in this situation.
Why the OP decided to leave them off their CV sent to the new employer is largely beside the point.0
