Safety glass/perspex to cover round window

Hi, looking for a bit of advice....

We are in the process of getting a loft conversion and the new staircase has a platform which is pretty much level with a round stained glass window. I am looking for a way to make this potential hazard safe as if a child was to fall down stairs the possibility is they could crash into the window.

I was thinking safety glass or perspex, say an inch diameter larger than the window itself and attach it to the wall, covering the whole window.

Does this make sense, if so where is the best place to get such a piece of glass/perspex?

Thanks

Fraggle

  • Is the window not recessed? If it is then just get a round piece of laminated glass and glue it to the window frame.

Perspex shatters and can be dangerous (uv light also damages it). Heat treated toughened glass breaks into a million sharp tiny pieces. Laminate is more expensive but the plastic layer in the middle means that in the event of a substantial impact the glass will just crack but remain intact.

If you do need it to be fixed to the plaster you can finish it off with a timber or metal frame. The frame would also allow you to remove the glass for cleaning etc..
  • You could put some sort of metal grill over the window, attached to the wall.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • as you can see the window is recessed, I just thought the safest way would be to attach something to the wall to cover whole window.

a metal grill would be the very safest option, not sure about how it would look, need to think about it more!
