Changing Insurer Whilst Making a Claim

We need to make a claim against our contents insurance but will be looking to change insurers with the renewal data a month away. Do we have to stay with current insurer until claim settled?

No, I don't think you do....but I do suspect it might be simpler if you stayed with your current insurer for another year until your claim is settled. I think a new insurer would look long a hard at unsettled claim before agreeing to cover you.

Further to Labman, obviously bear in mind that the existing Insurer will want the full year's premium; ie. there will be no return premium for that last month.
    Reassuringly expensive

I paid the full premium 11 months ago to the Post Office. I phoned a few months ago to let them know I may need to make a claim (different matter). They said somebody from L&G would be in touch but they never did.

Luckily the problem was resolved fairly cheaply and so i didn't need to claim.

Shocking customer service though so i wont be going with the cheapest option this time.

I recommend that you read your policy terms and conditions as it would be stated there.

differs from insurer to insurer - some will take you on with a claim going through and some wont. This is usually becaue some insurers check CUE (Claims Underwriting Exchange) to look at previous claims and costs before accepting you. Whereas, some only look when you make claim and not when you take out the policy. If you have a recent unsettled claim, the the insurer you are asking to be your new provider sees on CUE the claim is not settled they may not accept. However, if they dont look then they probably wont mind but they may want to know the cost of the claim before they insure you...and if your claim has not been paid then you cant answer that question so they may not take you on....its so confusing. However, contents claims are usually resolved quite quickly so you may have no need to worry. :T
