Ridiculously High Tariff?

Options
I am on a pre-payment electricity meter with British Gas. I have always thought electric was expensive not thinking to query the tariff I was paying.
I live in a block of flats and recently all the electric meters were moved from inside the flats to a room on the ground floor. All the electric meters are in this room so this is how I have noticed my tariff is very much higher than anyone else on a pre-payment key meter. I am on the 'standard' tariff paying a unit price of 22.848p per kWh up to 720 kWh and 14.238p thereafter. Last year I used 5183 kWh which means I am a high usage household.
Being able to see all the other meters I have discovered everyone is paying less than I am in some cases I'm paying double+ more. For instance the flat underneath me is paying 10.23p per kWh all year round. I don't know who their supplier is. Others seems to be paying between 14.50p per kWH - 17.67p per kWh.
I emailed British Gas and queried this . They said they didn't know any companies charging 10.23p per kWh but insisted if that was correct it would soon be increased as all energy suppliers were increasing the cost. They then went on to advise me to not leave standbys' on and what sort of light bulbs did I use? They did not seem to grasp the fact that it wasn't my consumption that was the problem it is the fact I am paying so much more than anyone else per kWh. I can't find anyone charging that tariff searching the net nor can I find that cheap tariff of 10.23p or anything close.
This meter is right next to mine and as I'm feeding money into mine every other day I can't help but see that meter cash total has barely dropped to mine using £10 + (there are 3 people living there, home all day as opposed to just me! It's really annoying me now.

  • Agreed, that price is quite high. Looks like you are on the two tier system like me. I am on 24 p tier one then 9.7 p tier 2. ( credit meter tariff ) with British Gas I have been looking at the new "clear and simple " tariffs on the prepays, they are around the 13.5 p a kwh mark inclusive of standing charges

...but not enough to knock on their door, introduce yourself and ask about their supplier & tariff?

At a guess if there is such a low rate there will also be a daily standing charge on the meter too.

Anyone else think this was going to be a thread about RHT meters?

From your rates, I assume you're in Manweb region. I checked on a swicthing site and only Spark Energy would be any cheaper than your current tariff(£28/year less). Their rate is 11.5p, but comes with a massive standing charge of £123/year. You should also check on here about their reputation.

Your British Gas tariff is easiliy the cheapest (Prepay) from the 'big six' and is also slightly cheaper than Clear & Simple.

As for the other meters charging 10.23p, as these also prepay meters? These customers may well have fixed their prices some time ago (with any supplier) and the product will no longer be available to new customers. They will also be paying a standing charge.

Have you checked to see if you can get yourself a better deal elsewhere?

  • Thanks everyone! I haven't knocked on the neighbours door because we don't get on! For some unknown reason they decided to scratch every panel on my car last summer presumably because they didn't have a parking space but that's a different matter. It does add insult to injury though! There is a debt on their meter too for £2. Could that be the standing charge? It is a pre-payment meter.

Why do you say "is the fact I am paying so much more than anyone else per kWh."???

Your own data would suggest you are on the cheapest tariff of all the meters except for one other meter that belongs to a neighbour you are not on speaking terms with.

The cheapest unit charge currently generally available to you is 12.392p, but there is also a £145 annual daily standing charge applied but it would still be cheaper for you than your existing tariff.

There could be many reasons the neighbour is on a lower tariff.
e.g. perhaps they agreed to a lower fixed tariff some time ago that is no longer available? perhaps they are on a special low social tariff?
As you are not on speaking terms, I doubt you will ever know.
I would suggest you concentrate on getting the best deal for you rather than worrying about that one other neighbour may have a lower tariff than you.
  • The reason I said 'everyone is paying a lower tariff than me' is simply because they are! When I seem to be ploughing money into the meter at a scary rate and when doing so happen to notice everyone elses meter displays have barely changed from the last time I was there is bound to make me query why? The fact I don't get on with my neighbour is irrelevant but answered the question asked why I don't call and ask them who their with. Its not just them who are on the cheaper tariff EVERYBODY is on a cheaper tariff. All the other neighbours I have spoken to. My overall impression from that is in money terms I spent far more on electric than anyone else.

I don't understand the problem, if everyone else is paying less per KWH switch supplier don't waste time whinging at British Gas. The fact that you are a high user is relevant to how much money you are having to feed the meter with, can't see why that is if you live alone.
