I am looking for help and advice, my current unit ( Packard Bell, celeron cpu 3.33 gh,1.43 gb of Ram,Windows XP ) is playing up, that is running slow, programs crashing, refusing to shut down etc. as it is about 7 or 8 years old i thought that it might be a good time to replace it.
I only use it for Web browsing, storing my photo,s and as a word proccessor for sending letters and e-mail etc.
Can anybody recommend a good replacement unit? i do not need to change my screen or keyboard/mouse.

Thanks in advance

Ganga:)

Can you give an idea as to your budget or what you'd like to spend?
  • As above, follow Closed's excellent guide and you'll be fine....I dream of a machine with specs like yours! I'm writing this on a machine with a Celeron 1.2GHz single core processor and 512Mb of SDRAM @ 100MHz. it's lean, stable and fine for the simple tasks that I require of it.

A clean install or Factory Restore will cost you nothing to try first before replacing.
Absolutely any modern PC will do all the tasks you ask with loads to spare.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I agree but make sure you have backups first

Thanks for the help, sorry did not reply sooner but worked late last night.
    Budget - £300/400
If i do a factory restore wil i loose all programs? ie office, google earth etc.
The main complaint that i have is when i open a program ie Olympus Master 2, it states " Olympus Master 2 has encounted a problem and must close"i removed the program and re-installed it but it is still the same and now several other programs are doing the same!!
I have also tried to System restore to an earlier date to correct this but will not system restore,it tries then comes up unsucsessfull,i think the hammer will be coming out shortley!!
I have backed up all my photos and documents,i also bought a 16g cruzer blade memory stick and backed up all files on the computor,i pluged it in to-night to check what was on it and the computor said it could not open this type of file!

Now a couple of daft questions: if i buy a new computer will it come pre loaded with an operating system?

Will it have microsoft office on it?

Sorry for long rant but need help

    Yours Hopefully

    Ganga
  • If you do a factory restore, it will likely reset the machine to how it was when you took it out the box. This means any changes you made to both the computers settings and programs will go back to day one. So it is VERY important that you backup any data including your favourites, documents, music, pictures and emails (if you use Outlook Express or similar).

If you buy a new machine, I can't say if it will have Office it or not. It will probably, sadly, come with Windows 8 installed.

Many new machines will come with a trial version of Office and after 60 days you have to buy it or find it very restricted. You can, of course, use something like Libre Office which is free(and opens office files) or perhaps the place where you work has a deal whereby you can get an office licence cheaply.

If you do buy a new PC - I recommend Medion (if you buy from Aldi - you get a 2 year warranty) - if you order on-line, 1 year !!
Check the website and buy through Quidco for cash back

The only problem is Windows 8 !!
Which, in my opinion is not worth having.....
  • It is always worth trying to reinstall everything first, as has been suggested, as this will most likely boost performance significantly and save you a lot of money. You don't really need a more powerful device just for web browsing. Just make sure you back up everything you want to keep so that it doesn't get lost.
