Hi All,

This is my first post...

I live in Bristol and am about to go for an interview for a job in Cardiff - in the dim recesses of my mind, I think I came across an article a few years ago that said there were incentives in place to encourage more workers to Wales and that the Severn Bridge fee could be waived. I'm trying to get there as cheaply as possible (and will of course also consider train, lift sharing and things), but does anyone know if this is possible, I want to try and shave the £100 a month it could potentially cost to work in Wales...

  • If you are classed as a disabled person and have a blue badge, you can present that and the toll is waived.

I would imagine there is a website somewhere that offers joining people up to car-share. Have a go at googleing it.

No incentives that I know of (I also lived in Bristol when I started working in Cardiff) but the TAG can be cheaper than paying each day, depending on how many days you work per month/quarter.

We were allowed to go over the Severn Bridge on the day we got married, for free, many years ago. The "just married" in shaving foam on the car bonnet probably had something to do with how they sussed. ;)

Thanks guys - am neither disabled nor a biker, but the TAG thing might work (not that clear on the SB website however). I'm sure somewhere in the ether there's a memory of an incentives thing, but perhaps it didn't go ahead. Oh well

Ha ha, you see there is method in people having to pay to get into Wales, but free to get out!!

(Think my logic just went a little fuzzy for a second)

My take on it after looking at the prices page:

    Price per journey: £5.10

TAG per month: £89.76 ... so 18 journeys or more per month means a saving.

TAG per quarter: £269.28 ... is exactly 3 times the cost of a monthly TAG!

    Good luck with the interview!

  • I was lucky, i was offered a job in Bristol while living in cardiff, part of the package was my train fee paid for.

yeah, you should definately ask if the company will pay your bridge fee for you, if they say no then hey-ho but its worth a try

You could always buy two old cars between five sharers and five folding bikes. Then you could drive to Aust, cycle across the bridge, jump in your other car at Chepstow and continue on your way. Do opposite on way back.

Hey presto, a saving of five bridge tolls every day!!
