child keeps getting infections in fingers and toes

Here is a picture of my grandchild's finger, he was in hospital for 5 days on antibiotics and almost had an operation to lance and wash the poison out. After a week the antibiotics kicked in and he lost his nail and the finger has almost got better. This was several weeks ago. It all started with his finger just going red around the base of the nail. it began to swell to almost 5 times its size and the poor little lad was in great pain.
Just a few days ago we noticed his little toe started to go red, exactly how the finger went. After 4 days puss began to develop in the toe but luckily this was easier to squeeze out in the bath. He was in pain but the poison has to be removed otherwise it will just swell and track up his foot. Tracking happened in his hand until the poison was removed.
Took him to the hospital today and was given antibiotics again but have to see his GP to be assessed by a paediatrician. This is very odd and never seen this before. He's not biting himself or cutting himself or anything, he's 8 months old now and this is kind of worrying.
Basically has anyone seen this before or has their children had this condition. His toes has swelled up but at the moment not as bad as his finger did.

Is anyone else cutting or picking at his nails?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Ouch!!! What has the GP actually diagnosed it as?
Could it be a reaction to washing powder? Could he be ripping his nails on clothes / bedding and then the teeny cut leading to infection?
Poor little one! Hope he gets better soon!
OH! Do you have any pets that can come close to him? Could a dog / cat licked something and then licked his hand / foot?0 -
It's not medical advice - that's what the GP and paediatrician is for - but I would be cleaning his home to within an inch of its life, bathing the dog, washing the cat (yes, it is possible), getting that place so clean, there isn't the slightest chance there are some staph. germs lurking around anywhere. And I'd be washing my hands in hibiscrub rather than normal soap, in case it was coming from me.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Oh yes - how are you cutting his nails? If its scissors or clippers, maybe they are holding the infection and each time it's re-infecting?
If your biting them off with your own teeth, please remember how many bacteria your mouth holds...0 -
Looks like a whitlow - I had one as a child and it was extremely painful. Best see a doctor as soon as the redness starts to ensure it is treated promptly.Stash Busting Challenge waiting for inspiration:D :j0

no pets, and believe me his mum is Italian on her hands and knees all the time, home is spotless. They do not use and soapy substances on him as he has a little exma (not sure how to spell it)Jojo_the_Tightfisted wrote: »It's not medical advice - that's what the GP and paediatrician is for - but I would be cleaning his home to within an inch of its life, bathing the dog, washing the cat (yes, it is possible), getting that place so clean, there isn't the slightest chance there are some staph. germs lurking around anywhere. No worries
I don't have kids so I'm just running off what I've heard.
Out of interest, how are you actually keeping his nails short?
Could it be that he got a cut under his nail, got food stuck in it which has now led to a staph infection and your not cutting his nails incase it makes it worse, therefore it's not getting properly cleaned out?
Just running off ideas!
what a horrible situation for you and son to be in. I hope all is well soon for you

Oh and I had a staph infection in my upper thigh a few months back. It was caused by a little bug bite! I hadn't even noticed it until it got red and angry. Has he been in the garden? Could it be a couple of ants that have nipped him?0
