My dear husband at the age of 76 has suddenly decided that it's now time to enter the technological world, and having seen his granddaughter with her ipad, has asked me to research the possible purchase of a tablet. I am therefore asking for the help of all you forumites out there to suggest what you consider to be the best 10" tablet available that is not too complicated for an aged technophobe to learn to use.

In my experience all Android tablets using the same operating system work in practically the same way (with some little tweaks from each manufacturer).
We have two and they are very similar, a bit like the same windows version would be on two different PCs. I don't think they'll be much difference in usability between different brands (Samsung is the one I personally prefer).
Tablets are easy to use, and as they are more limited in what they let you do, they are easier to use than a PC.
I've never used an Ipad though it sounds very similar.0 -
Buy a good quality one not the cheap end no name models .
Android
Nexus 7 or 10
Samsung Tab 7 or 10
Samsung Note 10.1
Apple
IPad Mini
Ipad
All the Android above are virtually identical in OS and layout . Samsung just adds its own interface .
All above Android use Google Play store for apps .
Nexus as they have no add on sd card slot i would want min size of 32GB .
Sorry know very little about the Apple range .

The apple ones are more user friendly IMO. I went for a sony one first, and changed, as the sony was a little slow and crashed a few times, had no such problems with the iPad. However, if on a budget apples are over priced!0

I tried one, couldnt get away with the touch pad and much preferred my laptop. I also like a proper keyboard, I suppose thats because Ive been a typist for many years. There are 10" note/netbooks.
If you are going to buy one though, I would suggest you buy it online, then you have to choice to return it. If you buy it from a shop its a done deal.
And good for him.............make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

this reminds me.. we have one with and one without sd card slot, I would recommend one with if you want to move files easily between tablet and pc (e.g. pictures). That's one of the reasons why I like our Samsung note tablet.0 -
If your granddaughter already has an Ipad, I'd recommend that you go for one as well - at least that way he has already seen it and knows what to expect, and you have family on hand who can recomment apps and help with any technical issues.0

I'd go for an iPad. I love mine & it's so very easy to use. He's got the great advantage of granddaughter who can advise, should he have any problems(which I doubt he will have). Good for him, you're never too old to learn something new.0
