You could always ask them if they can repair your own handset instead if you're happy to wait on it. Just be polite and explain your concerns.

On the flipside of that quite often a "refurbished" item can be, in any other sense, brand new. For example they could be cancelled orders etc.

Doesn't hurt to ask the genius for a new one. They are always kind enough to go back store and find you one. It says on the brown box if it is new or refurbished.

My iPhone 3G cracked, they found a new one for me. My iPod had a damaged dock connector, they only had refurbished ones, they ordered a new one for me that I had to wait 2 days for.

Never found Apple to be "your mileage may vary" for repairs, they always go the extra step for the customer.
