Live in council house but rent out my home

so you rent social housing and then sublet your living room as a landlord?
obviously a loophole somewhere that needs to be closed
Why? sounds like he has his head screwed on and he's making some money. I can see why he has done what he is doing. Tenant paying rent on his house he was left in a will, he rents out a room in his flat, he gets most of his rent paid on the flat and profit from renting out the house he was left. Makes good business sense! Although it appears unpalatable to a lot on here, he's got a good thing going, he's making money, entrepreneurial and what he is doing is perfectly legal! You are only obligated to have a social housing tenancy as your MAIN residence, you are legally allowed to own and rent out or leave empty as many other properties as you wish to.
I don't blame the lad, good on him, I'd do the same in his situation :T
Getting by and making the best of his situation is his responsibility and he's doing that. In fact, I imagine lots of social tenants who got tenancies years ago who climbed the social ladder have done the same.0 -

Oh yes, you've never had a job more than 1 day a week. What a shining example you are.

I did well out of a bad situation. However being on befits since I left home when I was 17 until about 6 months ago made me realises that you are better off on benefits in this country (I was on income support most of that time so wasn’t even being asked to get a job). I am seeking work now because I am not on benefits. Also the way social housing is allocated seems unfair, as I was just given a flat without even asking for one.so you rent social housing and then sublet your living room as a landlord?

Er the government are encouraging people in social housing to take in lodgers, such as those under occupying.somethingcorporate wrote: »Sounds like you have no qualms ripping off the tax payer and seem to think you are doing joe public a favour.

Ripping off the tax payer how? When I got HB I got the full £82pw paid. My lodger prior to moving in to mine was in a hostel the rent in his room was £130pw all paid for by housing benefit.
No I haven’t had a job for more than one day because when I was on benefits it wasn’t worth it. Now I no longer receive them I am looking for a job.0 -
you may not be receiving benefits yourself, but you are receiving someone elses benefit entitkement for allowing them to sleep in your living room.
you could live in your own property and take in 3 lodgers! no one would complain about that because you wouldnt be taking housing that could go to someone who really needed it.
and then your lodger might take in someone else too.
so that would be 8 people housed.
you havent thought this through. i bet you could get more money from 3 shared acconodation renters than the family that is currently in your home.0 -
Sorry to hijack the thread but ive got a question similar to this
If someone lives in a relatives house rent free and they rent out their own house which is mortgaged how will this effect them under universal credits?0 -

on the contrary this is exactly what the government has suggested under occupiers do to ensure they do not have the bedroom tax reduction.so you rent social housing and then sublet your living room as a landlord?

they then have the non dependant deduction made on their hb entitlement which the non dependant can make up without effecting other benefits.
Some local authorities are asking such tenants to allow them to place homeless applicants with them to solve the issue of homeless accomodation at the same time as preventing a loss of benefit from under occupiers.0
