Travel Insurance - Round the World

Hi, I'm going on a round the world trip in August for a year. Obviously i need to take insurance, and the company who i've booked the flights with (STA Travel) have insurance that is about £300.00 that covers for pretty much everything.
Although, looking on the web, i see insurance that covers the same things, but is only about £40.00 ?!
How come this is? Which would be the best option to take, because i'm doing the whole trip on a tight budget!
Thanks

are you looking at an annual policy when you have looked online? I only ask as that looks about right for an annual policy but with that type you can only travel for a maximum length of ime for each trip (something like 30 days normally) ut will cover you for multiple trips away, I dont think an annual policy will actually cover you for a year away.
I looked for insurance to cover a friends daughter for 3 months and it was around £100, the only way we found to get it cheaper was to say she was backpacking (somehow that made it cheaper???)
hope that makes sense and is of some help, have a fabulous time!finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!0 -
Thanks for that, yeah looking in more detail, it was for regular trips away within the year, so wouldnt have suited me!0

try looking a backpacker insurance, we got quotes for around £120 for the 3 months on ordinary long stay insurance but got that down to around £70 for backpacker and it covered more I think, worth a look!finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!0

When I went travelling I went with insureandgo. They were cheaper than STA and they do have specific backpacker insurance. I would get a quote from them and compare. I seem to remember that they didn't have exactly the same limits as STA but they were pretty similar (things like £2m medical cover instead of £5m etcetera).0

I went RTW 8 months with insureandgo as Adventure Traveller for 198. I then decided to stay in Asia for another 5 months, gave them a call and renewed for another 110 ( I think).0
