Touchpad mouse pointer gone all shaky

Sony Vaio, about two and a half years old. Windows 7. Internet access via a ZTE dongle on 3. Signal usually excellent, until tonight...
The Synaptics Pointing Device on my netbook has started behaving in a weird manner, i.e. when I'm moving it around the screen it goes all jerky instead of operating smoothly. Particulary annoying when I'm trying to drag a scroll bar down or across. When I'm not moving it, it stays still, but as soon as I manoeuvre the touchpad the pointer starts "vibrating" jerkily, for want of a better description.
I've looked at the settings but can't work out what, if anything, I should adjust to stop this happening.
Could it be caused by a weak Internet signal, and be nothing to do with the device?

No.Could it be caused by a weak Internet signal
Try, control panel>mouse>pointer and pointer options. Or try cleaning the touchpad.
I use a wireless mouse. Much easier than the touchpad.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions. I've switched everything off overnight and today it seems okay again, so it was probably "just one of those things".
I've only used touchpads for several years now and find a mouse awkward, although I dare say I could get used to one again if need be. I like not having to move my hands back and forth to the keyboard - lazy or what? :rotfl:
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
