Virginmedia Superhub, Opendns and timed access

Has anyone mastered virginmedia's superhub?
Due to my external router packing up, I have been forced into using the wireless facility of the superhub but although I can get all my devices to connect to the Internet through it, half the things I have tried simply appear not to work.
The main two are:
1. No matter what I do the timed access rule in both the ip address and mac address filter pages do not have any effect.
2. I want to use opendns but to do that you need to change the dns settings of the superhub. I've read in the help pages that the superhub will not allow this, so to use opendns I will have to alter the dns settings of each device connecting wirelessly. Is there no way to avoid this? Has anyone using the superhub found a method to employ opendns without touching the connecting devices?

The superhub is really frustrating as it has all the functions I need(apart from changing the dns) but that's no good if they don't work properly.

  • The SH does not allow you to set a preferred DNS server. I wouldn't be at all surprised if timed access doesn't work either, but I've never used it.

You don't 'master' the SH - it's a law unto itself. The SH is fine in modem mode. For the sake of your sanity and a happy family life, get a new router.

Yes modem mode and a proper router are the way to go. If you want good facilities without spending an arm and a leg then a Tenda N60 gives simultaneous dual band wifi, a usb port for storage or a printer, and a gigabit switch although one port is labelled IPTV so that only leave 3 normal ports. I've just bought one off ebay but if you prefer eBuyer do them too for a similar price which is under £40 delivered.

Firmware is a bit crude but it does seem to work apart from only offering 11 2.4GHz channels if UK selected so I went for Germany which gives 13.

http://www.tenda.cn/tendacn/product/show.aspx?productid=387 is the manufacturers site with a manual download so you can check the facilities.
