2nd hand miles?

  • How is a second hand mk5 golf, worse than a FF? Golfs are well built, built to last, well engineered, common and so easily repaired, efficient, hold value, look decent? Can you specify the way in which the model I'm after is hell on Earth (as you describe), which is different or worse than any other car? And how are second hand golfs so terrible, that many people buy and run them, all over the world, and pay good money to do so?

    I'm afraid like many others you believe the myth that Golf's are special - they are fairly well screwed together I guess (though rarely in Germany) but most components are cheap, nasty bits made in Mexico/South Africa/China etc.

    Read this for starters;

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volkswagen/golf-v-2004/?section=bad

    And then as suggested earlier, much, much more around the web.

    The people paying good money are other believers of the myth.

    Sorry, actually trying to help you.
    And that my son, is how to waft a towel!
  • I have read around the net, and not many negatives too. Of course, they can go wrong, like any other car.

    Before I check that link, what other nippy 1.4-1.6 hatches do you suggest, if it's not a golf (or FF & Civic)?

    Well, I can pretty much guarantee you won't buy a second Golf!

    They're truly terrible, and not exactly rare - read up about some problems on forums etc. to avoid disappointment.

    I got my 1st Golf 25 years ago and had 4 more since and a Corrado, my next car? A Golf Mk7 when they are available :cool:

    That link often points to isolated incidents and teething problems on new upgrades. Anyone can construct that sort of list, for any car, for any year, whether isolated to a handful of cars, or affecting every car off the production line. So I wouldn't take it as gospel, especially since a number of the points relate to gti, 1.4 tfsi, etc. It's quite easy to find a 'bashing' blog or site, for any product ever invented, but it doesn't detract from the overall product, I believe.

    Why not buy a 2007 car, A hatch/saloon or estate. petrol or diesel for £2000 ish... ?

    OK mileage will be 120k.. But buy the right one and its a bargain. BUT you need a full papertrail... This will be a better buy than the 80k mile car thats been treated badly.

    Shhh dont tell anyone its a Mondeo. On my 3rd now.. Currently a diesel, Just over £2000 for a 2004 car in 2009. Cheap motoring.

    Although i have pushed the mileage up more than i normally would. Usually under 6000 a year. But i have done a lot more than that last year.

    Bargains to be had when at 120k miles. Most people dont give it a 2nd glance.
    Just me looking for the wads of paperwork and receipts.

    New turbo and clutch 8000 & 12,000 miles ago and genuine parts fitted by a dealer.. Mad not to buy it.

    Of course, they can go wrong, like any other car.

    This sentence is almost always written by someone with a VAG car, or someone in the process of convincing themselves they should buy one.

    Funny, but you don't tend to get Honda or Toyota owners using this excuse.

    Wow, you've got a really bad dose of the bug.

    I KNOW that you haven't owned 5 VW's in a row and not had problems (no matter how many times you try to deny it), it's impossible, but you can't bring yourself to buy anything else - there are thousands of people with the same 'illness'.

    p.s. Mk7 is available now.

    Well, you'll find out soon enough that your beliefs are incorrect.

    Here's the latest unfortunate driver to find out that VAG cars are not as good as they are perceived to be, the expensive way;

    These forums have plenty more similar stories if you care to look.

    p.s. note how he/she thought it was unusual, but then found out it wasn't...always the same, everyone thinks they got the 'bad one' :)
