GAP charged me £34 for nothing!

GAP European HQ is in the Midlands somewhere (Rugby I think). No idea of GAP's exact corporate structure, but I doubt that UK debit card processing is dealt with back at US command central.0 -

Nope. Sorry. Can't think of any "tax purposes" why any business would have to keep the card details relating to a particular sale. Why do you think HMRC would be interested in the card details, and what do you think they'd do if they had them?

For proof should the tax man come knocking on the door saying you are fiddling the figures.
Remember a retailers till roll has the full card number on it. I would expect that most retailer will store these for at least a certain period of time and not destroy straight away. Simple auditing would say at least 12 months in case some transactions have been missed.
Either way so long as the details are secured, a retailer can keep any data they see fit.
6 years drops nicely to statute of limitation.
There is also the other option that it is GAPS merchant bank that have slipped up and applied that days processing tape again.
