To be honest I don't think DVLA should have taken the green slip from you (V5C2) This is the only record a person has that says that they have bought a car & is the only form that enables the new keeper to get tax if the V5 (log book) is out of their hands. Phone DVLA & tell them they have taken this in error & you need it to obtain tax as you haven't received the V5 in your name in time.

The V5C2 is attached to the V62 when applying for a V5,otherwise it will cost you twenty five pounds.

The V5C2 is attached to the V5. The V62 is a form filled out to apply for a V5?

Yes, but it will cost you twenty five pounds unless you are a new keeper who has not received the V5C (as in the OP's case) and you send the V5C/2 with the V62, in which case it is free.
  • I suspect its more than just fee regulations. The clerk at the DVLA local office would not accept my V62 application without the V5c2. I'd have happily paid £25 to keep the V5c2, especially if I could have taxed the vehicle with it.

Further to contacting the DVLA again, they have advised me to send off a V890 form, which declares a vehicle is off the road (SORN), without needing a V5c reference, or V11 reminder reference.
