Sorry, but well beyond my expertise. Barely understood your reply.
I'm well into my 50s, self taught (with help from reading this forum) and had not been near a computer until 2005.
Heh heh no worries, yes, it is a bit hardcore I wasn't sure how much experience you'd had!
You could (easily) install a pre-integrated Drupal server or similar (look at turnkeylinux) and play with configuring Drupal/joomla/wordpress/all kinds of sites/apps. You get a lot of results for not too much techie experience, and you'll impress yourself ;-)0 -
Hope I don't come across as an ungrateful so and so, I'll try and give a reply to each response.Getting Arch Linux installed and set up exactly as you want it will teach you a fair bit about how Linux works... if you're into that sort of thing...

It's a great OS...
I've already had a look at that, after seeing your posts over the years.:)
The trouble was, I got bogged down and gave up with having to research every little thing. I resolved to stick to ready made variants.a slight different train of thought, how about case modding? ok so not a free option as you need some tools and usualy some extra materials but can be an amazing challenge
I have no imagination,. I'm completely useless designing 'pretty' things. I am unable to see the difference between a beige box and the most radically customised case, assuming they have equal performance/efficiency.Turn it into your own little web server?
Doesn't need to be connected to the internet, just stick Apache on it and see what you can do with it through local connections. Loads of additional freeware you could put on it, like PHP, MySQL, WordPress etc.
Already got one up and running.
HP t5000 thin client, XPe and Abyss Web Server
Abyss is much lighter than Apache and runs fine on such a low powered system
I call it a vanity site, as in 'vanity publishing', content varies with my mood. Linked to Google Apps to give me my own emails.
Favourites are
1. Linux Firewall box, I can use another low powered PC I've got lying around.
2. Having a further look at paddyrgs pre-integrated Drupal server.
Thanks again for all the replies.:beer:Move along, nothing to see.0
