I topped up my Quantum card by £30 as had £3.49 left, then I inserted card and it beeped saying CALL HELP and all my gas went off in the house! The new card arrived this morning so I need to slot it in to register it but would the old card work ?

maybe someone else has had similar experience between one machine breaking and old card with credit on? what did you do and how was it resolved, thanks!

In my experience (admittedly with another supplier) this'll need manual intervention.
They's send the £33.49 back to the meter and you'll collect it when you top up - it sounds like you haven't sent the old card back yet. You could call them to check but they'll probably ask you to do this.

The old card was paired with the old meter and won't work in the new one.

Thanks swanjon , all the info has been gleaned, I rang the call centre ,they couldnt have been nicer, the old card would not work in any other meter, that is correct, this is to prevent people using other peoples cards etc, and the lovely lady explained that they could see the credit was made successfully the other day and when I topped new card up for first time, the credit would show when I got home. I have since topped up ,and the full credit has been given to me, defunct old card posted back now :)
