I know it's an old thread but I just wanted to say my sister had rats under her shed and they were eating the chicken pellets. All she had to do was hang the feeders away from anywhere the rats could jump from (and placed a wide bin lid over the top) and block the access hole under the shed. It doesn't take a genius to outwit a rat.
I abhor people who reach for the poison straight away. Pure laziness in my opinion with no regard for the consequences.Dry January: 31/31 days. :T0 -

Right....now try feeding dairy cattle that way! In some situations food has to be down. Good husbandry is vital of course, including feed storage, but there are other circumstances where rats find food for much of the year without us. Out here rats tend to live from the field unless there are easier pickings until harvests. It's then they come in for the winter, the pickings are easy around farms.0 -
I had a rat problem, called the council in no charge and they laid poison down, it reduced the numbers for a while. The trouble is they when a rat is dying another rat will smell the dying rats breath and they don't eat what they smell on that rat. Also when the rat population starts diminishing they breed more to build the population back up. Anyway we just shoot them now and i haven't seen one for weeks. Saying that i bet i do tomorrow0
