car fuel economy comparison

Can anyone guide me where to look for an easy comparison of the fuel economy of motors to enable the right choice of a new or used purchase?
thanks in anticipation

  • I always use the "technical data" pages on https://www.parkers.co.uk to compare between models.

If you're looking at diesel cars then the figures in the reviews on https://www.dieselcar.com might be more realistic.

For new cars, you could consult the Vehicle Certification Agency database on their website here. The database can be searched in 5 different ways, but perhaps one of the more useful is a search on all vehicles capable of achieving a 'combined mpg' figure in the specified range.

Current and historical data (back to July 2000) can be downloaded in several formats here
