I received an email from Pets at Home sating if you are in their VIP Club (easy to join, just pick up a leaflet instore and get a temp card immediately) you can have your pet chipped at their participating stores for £5. It usually costs around £15-20 so there's a little saving to be had. Offer on between 23rd Feb and 5th March.
I've been meaning to have this done for a couple of weeks now since getting my wee cat and this has given me the push I need, so she's off to have it done tomorrow.

The dog kennels (owned by Council) in my area do this for free - just a small donation so might be worth ringing your local kennels if you have a dog that needs chipping. I am not sure about anyone else but I'd rather the money went towards feeding/looking after the dogs currently in kennels than paying a vet/shop to do it especially since the microchips are actually given out free (by Dogs Trust I believe?).
Also the RSPCA are in my area next week and microchipping dogs & cats for free so it's worth checking on their website to see if they are in your area.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
worth checking your area, but not all places do it free. my parents paid £30 to microchip thier cat. My dog was free. So this is a good deal if you cant get it for free.0

I've just come back from having my cat chipped and must say the staff at Pets at Home (Baguley) were lovely, very caring and seemed genuinely interested in the animal. They were knowledgeable and gave me some tips and there was no hard sell for anything else whatsoever. Overall I'm really pleased, well worth £5.00.Sex and Drugs and Sausage Rolls.0

Daft question here but is it painful for the dog?0
-
More painful if it goes missing and it's owner can't be traced!
No it doesn't hurt - if they do it like they do with cats - and inject the microchip into the back of the scruff of the neck.
My cats have never felt a thing - at the time or after.0 -

Depends on the dog, I know mine will yelp as they did with their booster. Imagine a grain of rice being injected. I think its more painful for them after the microchip is inserted as they will be a little sore.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
From Dogs Trust:
How is the microchip implanted?
In the UK the microchip is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is carried out by a suitably trained person. It is not carried out under anesthetic. Once implanted correctly the microchip is unlikely to fail and so provides lifelong permanent identification.
Is it going to hurt my pet?
Microchipping just feels like a small pinch or mild sting – akin to a minor injection. The dog does not feel the chip at all after it has been inserted.I :heartpuls M.S.E.Mortgage Free 18/01/10 13 years and 8 months early on a 20 year mortgage!
