V5C not in owners name

The registered keeper is not always the owner of the vehicle, i am aware of this.

We have found a car for sale, the car is at the address of the registered keeper though the registered keeper is not around. We suspect the car was being "fronted" to keep insurance costs down.

The seller is a relative of the registered keeper, they have both keys, the service history, the v5c, the MOT's etc.

The car also passed the HPI check..

We have a receipt for the seller to sign, and we were going to get a picture of the seller with the car...

How else can i protect myself on this?

The registered Keeper and yourself have to sign the VC5 together, not the seller.
Ask for the registered keeper to show ID.
    Be happy...;)
  • If you are buying it from the address on the V5 then whats the problem?

Could it be because the car is in the misses name and it is the man of the house who is dealing with the selling of the car?

    Son-Mother..

Registered keeper is away. The V5C can be sent away without the registered keepers signature, and i keep the green bit.

    Recipe for a scam then.
Registered keeper "returns" and reports it stolen....
    Be happy...;)

i bought the car this way. Previous owner's detailed on the v5x - dealer ws in posession of the v5c and ownership was not trasnferred art all. Dealer signed the v5c and gave me the counterpart.. well dodgy but the dealer provided me with an invouce and no doubt he would have an invoice from the previous owners side as well.

    So everything should match up.

I think this is a done thing, so as not to put additional owners onto the car. Also when flipping the car quickly there' no time to do it the proper way.

Though to be honest- I would not extend that trust to a private sale.

Also. make sure you fill this out when buying too.

I think im worrying over nothing, the car was sold via eBay & we were the winning bidder.

The car has been HPI checked.

The car is at the registered address on the V5C.

The seller has both keys, V5C, MOT etc.

We shall check that the seller has the same surname as the registered keeper, and create a sales receipt.

As the V5C says, "Registered Keeper of the Vehicle, is not always the Owner of the Vehicle".

As long as the genuine owner is not on holiday and going to return to find the house stripped and the car gone.
